High Springs is a major gateway to the unique “Springs Heartland” of North Florida. Located less than 10 miles west of Interstate 75 and with more than 300 nearby artesian springs along the Suwannee, Santa Fe, Withlacoochee, and Ichetucknee rivers, High Springs sees at least one million springs visitors every year. Currently there is no other publically-accessible springs environmental center anywhere in Florida.
The Florida Springs Institute is a private, non-profit corporation whose mission is to restore and protect springs through scientific monitoring and public education. To accomplish these goals the Florida Springs Institute has established a store front/office/springs welcome center in High Springs. The North Florida Springs Environmental Center is open to the public to provide information about local springs accessibility, activities, and environmental threats. Interested springs visitors are treated to colorful exhibits, interactive information kiosks, and educational opportunities to learn more about springs and their protection for future generations.
