Join the Florida Springs Institute for a Springs Outing to Salt and Silver Glen Springs with research biologist, Dr. Steven Walsh! The goal of Florida Springs Institute Springs Outings are to provide nature lovers the chance to learn about these beautiful, yet fragile ecosystems from qualified experts and scientists so that we may continue vital research and education efforts for the conservation of Florida springs and fresh waterways. Each Springs Outing holds a new adventure, new facts, information, and experiences.
October 2018 Springs Outing will be a guided trip to Salt Spring and Silver Glen Spring led by Dr. Steve Walsh, research biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey and member of the Florida Springs Institute Advisory Panel.
Of the many species of wildlife that are found in Florida springs, fishes are among the most visible to visitors. On this Springs Outing you will have the opportunity to snorkel, take underwater photos or video using your own equipment, and assist in catching fishes using seines and dipnets to observe them close-up. You will learn characteristics to identify different species and discover basic information about their biology, ecology, and conservation. Salt and Silver Glen Springs are among the recreational jewels of the Ocala National Forest and are unique in their geochemistry, providing the opportunity to see occasional marine species such as Striped Bass, Gray Snapper, and Atlantic Needlefish.
We will meet at 10:00 AM in the parking lot of Salt Springs Recreation Area. Following snorkeling and fish collecting we will eat lunch (bring your own) in the park before moving on to Silver Glen Springs in the afternoon. Bring your mask, snorkel, fins, wet suit, towel, change of clothes, and enthusiasm to learn about fish and springs ecology!
This event is free to the public with a $5.00 suggested donation!
The Florida Springs Institute is not covering admission fees for this outing. Please bring cash to pay admission fees for Salt Springs ($5.50 per person) and Silver Glen Springs ($6 per person).
