As I step into the role of Executive Director at the Howard T. Odum Florida Springs Institute, I am deeply aware of the profound responsibility that accompanies this honor. Guided by our mission to understand and disseminate knowledge about Florida’s precious artesian springs, we stand at a pivotal moment. The work ahead builds upon a rich legacy of scientific inquiry, community engagement, and environmental stewardship. Our past efforts have illuminated the intricate beauty and ecological significance of over 1,000 springs, fostering a widespread appreciation and understanding of their role in our lives and environment. The foundation laid by Dr. Knight, through his visionary leadership and unwavering dedication, has not only advanced our scientific knowledge but has also inspired a collective commitment to protect these natural wonders. His legacy is a beacon that guides our journey forward.

The challenges we face in safeguarding our springs are matched by our resolve to overcome them. Through our diverse array of programs, including the Blue Water Audit, SpringsWatch, Springs Friendly Yards, and our critical ecological health assessments, we are deepening our understanding and commitment to these ecosystems. As we continue to welcome thousands of visitors at the Florida Springs Welcome Center and engage with communities through education and outreach initiatives, our mission grows increasingly vital amidst escalating environmental pressures. As the essence of our work lies not in accolades or achievements but in the enduring impact we have on conserving our springs for future generations.

Embracing this next chapter for FSI, I am inspired by the journey that brought me here—from my first visit to a spring as an FSI intern more than a decade ago to my return to the institute that has shaped the trajectory of my life and career. This statement is not just an introduction but a reaffirmation of my commitment to this cause and to the people who make our work possible. Together, we will forge a future where the majesty of Florida’s springs continues to inspire awe, support life, and kindle the spirit of conservation. I am grateful for the trust placed in me by the FSI Board of Directors, the unwavering support of our community, and the opportunity to lead an organization that stands as a testament to the power of collective action and shared passion. Let us move forward, guided by the lessons of our past and motivated by the promise of a brighter future for our springs and for all who depend on them.
